It is celebrated on February 14 by the custom of sending greeting cards or gifts to express affection. The cards, known as valentines, are often designed with hearts to symbolize love. Every February, across the country, candy, flowers, and gifts are exchanged between loved ones, all in the name of St. Valentine. But who is this mysterious saint and why do we celebrate this holiday? The history of Valentine's Day -- and its patron saint -- is shrouded in mystery. The history of Valentine's Day is obscure, and further clouded by various fanciful legends. St. Valentine's Day, as we know it today, contains vestiges of both Christian and ancient Roman tradition. Its roots are obscured by mystery and there are varying opinions about it. Its origins have become themes of many legends. According to legend, the holiday has its roots in the ancient Roman festival of Lupercalis/Lupercalia, a fertility celebration commemorated annually on February 15. As Christianity came to dominance in Europe, pagan holidays such as Lupercalia were frequently renamed for early Christian martyrs. In 496 AD, Pope Gelasius recast this pagan festival as a Christian feast day circa 496, declaring February 14 to be the feast day of the Roman martyr Saint Valentine, who lived in the 3rd century. Which St. Valentine this early pope intended to honor remains a mystery. According to the Catholic Encyclopedia, there were at least three early Christian saints by that name. One was a priest in Rome, another a bishop in Terni, and of a third St. Valentine almost nothing is known except that he met his end in Africa. Rather astonishingly, all three Valentines were said to have been martyred on Feb. 14. Most scholars believe that the St. Valentine of the holiday was a priest who attracted the disfavor of Roman emperor Claudius II around 270. The history of St. Valentine's Day has two legends attached to it - the Protestant and the Catholic legend. According to both legends, Valentine was a bishop who held secret marriage ceremonies of soldiers in opposition to Claudius II who had prohibited marriage for young men and was executed by the latter. Although many scholars agree that Lupercalia was moved from Feb. 15th to the 14th and was Christianized by associating it with this St. Valentine character, it is still unclear just who the historical St. Valentine was. One school of thought believes that he was a Roman martyred for refusing to give up his Christian faith. According to church tradition St. Valentine was a priest/bishop of Rome in about the year 270 A.D. At that time the Roman Emperor Claudius-II who had issued an edict forbidding marriage. This was around when the heyday of Roman empire had almost come to an end. Lack of quality administrators led to frequent civil strife. Learning declined, taxation increased, and trade slumped to a low, precarious level. And the Gauls, Slavs, Huns, Turks and Mongolians from Northern Europe and Asian increased their pressure on the empire's boundaries. The empire was grown too large to be shielded from external aggression and internal chaos with existing forces. Thus more of capable men were required to be recruited as soldiers and officers. When Claudius became the emperor, he felt that married men were more emotionally attached to their families, and thus, will not make good soldiers. He believed it made the men weak. So to assure quality soldiers, he banned marriage. Valentine, realized the injustice of the decree. Seeing the trauma of young lovers, he met them in a secret place, and joined them in the sacrament of matrimony. He defied Claudius and continued to perform marriages for young lovers in secret. But Claudius soon learned of this "friend of lovers," and had him arrested. While Valentine was in prison awaiting his fate, he came in contact with his jailor, Asterius. The jailor had a blind daughter. Asterius requested him to heal his daughter. The Catholic legend has it that through the vehicle of his strong faith he miraculously restored the sight of Asterius' daughter, a phenomenon refuted by the Protestant version which agrees otherwise with the Catholic one. Just before his execution, he asked for a pen and paper from his jailor, and signed a farewell message to her "From Your Valentine," a phrase that lived ever after. Another legend has it that Valentine, imprisoned by Claudius, fell in love with the daughter of his jailer. However, this legend is not given much importance by historians. Probably the most plausible story surrounding St. Valentine is one not focused on Eros (passionate love) but on agape (Christian love): he was martyred for refusing to renounce his religion. The emperor, impressed with the young priest's dignity and conviction, attempted to convert him to the Roman gods, to save him from certain execution. Valentine refused to recognize Roman Gods and even attempted to convert the emperor, knowing the consequences fully. What happened was what was to happen. All attempts to convert the emperor failed. On February 14, 270 AD, Valentine was executed. Valentine thus become a Patron Saint, and spiritual overseer of an annual festival. The festival involved young Romans offering women they admired, and wished to court, handwritten greetings of affection on February 14. The greeting cards acquired St.Valentine's name. It was not until the 14th century that this Christian feast day became definitively associated with love. According to UCLA medieval scholar Henry Ansgar Kelly, author of Chaucer and the Cult of Saint Valentine, it was Chaucer who first linked St. Valentine's Day with romance. In 1381, Chaucer composed a poem in honor of the engagement between England's Richard II and Anne of Bohemia. As was the poetic tradition, Chaucer associated the occasion with a feast day. In medieval France and England it was believed that birds mated on February 14, and the image of birds as the symbol of lovers began to appear in poems dedicated to the day. In Chaucer's "The Parliament of Fowls," the royal engagement, the mating season of birds, and St. Valentine's Day are linked: "For this was on St. Valentine's Day, When every fowl cometh there to choose his mate." By the Middle Ages, Valentine was one of the most popular saints in England and France. Despite attempts by the Christian church to sanctify the holiday, the association of Valentine’s Day with romance and courtship continued through the Middle Ages. Over the centuries, the holiday evolved, and by the 18th century, gift-giving and exchanging hand-made cards on Valentine's Day had become common in England. Hand-made valentine cards made of lace, ribbons, and featuring cupids and hearts eventually spread to the American colonies. The first commercial Valentine's Day greeting cards produced in the U.S. were created in the 1840s by Esther A. Howlanda Mount Holyoke, a graduate and native of Worcester, Mass. Howland, known as the Mother of the Valentine, made elaborate creations with real lace, ribbons and colorful pictures known as "scrap". The tradition of Valentine's cards did not become widespread in the United States, however, until Howland began producing them in large scale. Today, of course, the holiday has become a booming commercial success. According to the Greeting Card Association, 25% of all cards sent each year are valentines. The Valentine's Day card spread with Christianity, and is now celebrated all over the world. One of the earliest card was sent in 1415 AD by Charles, duke of Orleans, to his wife while he was a prisoner in the Tower of London. The card is now preserved in the British Museum. Whoever Valentine was, we know he was an actual person because archaeologists have recently unearthed a Roman catacomb and an ancient church dedicated to a Saint Valentine. August 03 South Africa Chinese 'become black'Who Could Believe That? A Chinese consideres himself as Black citizen??? The High Court in South Africa has ruled that Chinese South Africans are to be reclassified as black people. It made the order so that ethnic Chinese can benefit from government policies aimed at ending white domination in the private sector. The Chinese Association of South Africa took the government to court, saying its members had been discriminated against. An estimated 200,000 ethnic Chinese live in South Africa. The association said their members often failed to qualify for business contracts and job promotions because they were regarded as whites. The association said Chinese South Africans had faced widespread discrimination during the years of apartheid when they had been classified as people of mixed race. The BBC's Mpho Lakaje in Johannesburg says the Broad-Based Economic Empowerment and the Employment Equity Acts were designed to eradicate the legacy of apartheid which left many black people impoverished. The laws give people classed as blacks, Indians and coloureds (mixed-race) employment and other economic benefits over other racial groups. The Black Economic Employment concept was initiated by the governing ANC to help previously disadvantaged individuals - to start their own businesses or become part of existing companies - thus redressing the country's historic inequalities. Whites still on top Our correspondent says the ruling provides clarity for corporations in South Africa on the rights of their Chinese staff - who were declared "coloured" under apartheid but are generally regarded as white today. An example cited in court papers includes an oil company that disqualified Chinese citizens from getting a slice of its biggest empowerment transaction to date. The company says the group is not catered for in the Black Economic Empowerment codes. Another example includes a Chinese national who was refused an opportunity to buy shares from the Johannesburg Stock Exchange two years ago. None of the three government departments cited as respondents in the court case opposed the application. A study released last month revealed that white South Africans still earn around 450% more than their black counterparts, 14 years after the end of apartheid. June 19 Important to my Dearest "LaoWai"(Foreigner) living and/or visiting China
June 18 Dear Mr PresidentDear Mr. President,
Come take a walk with me. Let's pretend we're just two people and You're not better than me. I'd like to ask you some questions if we can speak honestly. What do you feel when you see all the homeless on the street? Who do you pray for at night before you go to sleep? What do you feel when you look in the mirror? Are you proud? How do you sleep while the rest of us cry? How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye? How do you walk with your head held high? Can you even look me in the eye And tell me why? Dear Mr. President, Were you a lonely boy? Are you a lonely boy? Are you a lonely boy? How can you say No child is left behind? We're not dumb and we're not blind. They're all sitting in your cells While you pave the road to hell. What kind of father would take his own daughter's rights away? And what kind of father might hate his own daughter if she were gay? I can only imagine what the first lady has to say You've come a long way from whiskey and cocaine. How do you sleep while the rest of us cry? How do you dream when a mother has no chance to say goodbye? How do you walk with your head held high? Can you even look me in the eye? Let me tell you 'bout hard work Minimum wage with a baby on the way Let me tell you 'bout hard work Rebuilding your house after the bombs took them away Let me tell you 'bout hard work Building a bed out of a cardboard box Let me tell you 'bout hard work Hard work Hard work You don't know nothing 'bout hard work Hard work Hard work Oh How do you sleep at night? How do you walk with your head held high? Dear Mr. President, You'd never take a walk with me. Would you By Pink featuring Indigo Girls
June 16 1976, June 16th - 2008,June 16th; already 32 years!!! "CRY FREEDOM, SOWETO"June the 16th would never be forgotten. When high-school students in Soweto (South-Western Township) started protesting for better education on 16 June 1976, police responded with teargas and live bullets. It is commemorated today by a South African national holiday, Youth day, which honors all the young people who lost their lives in the struggle against Apartheid and Bantu Education. In 1953 the Apartheid Government enacted The Bantu Education Act, which established a Black Education Department in the Department of Native Affairs. The role of this department was to compile a curriculum that suited the "nature and requirements of the black people." The author of the legislation, Dr Hendrik Verwoerd (then Minister of Native Affairs, later Prime Minister), stated: "Natives [blacks] must be taught from an early age that equality with Europeans [whites] is not for them." Black people were not to receive an education that would lead them to aspire to positions they wouldn't be allowed to hold in society. Instead they were to receive education designed to provide them with skills to serve their own people in the homelands or to work in labouring jobs under whites. Bantu Education did enable more children in Soweto to attend school than the old missionary system of education, but there was a severe lack of facilities. Nationally public to teacher ratios went up from 46:1 in 1955 to 58:1 in 1967. Overcrowded classrooms were used on a rota basis. There was also a lack of teachers, and many of those who did teach were underqualified. In 1961, only 10 per cent of black teachers held a matriculation certificate [last year of high school]. Because of the government's homelands policy, no new high schools were built in Soweto between 1962 and 1971 -- students were meant to move to their relevant homeland to attend the newly built schools there. Then in 1972 the government gave in to pressure from business to improve the Bantu Education system to meet business's need for a better trained black workforce. 40 new schools were built in Soweto. Between 1972 and 1976 the number of pupils at secondary schools increased from 12,656 to 34,656. One in five Soweto children were attending secondary school. This increase in secondary school attendance had a significant effect on youth culture. Previously, many young people spent the time between leaving primary school and obtaining a job (if they were lucky) in gangs, which generally lacked any political consciousness. But now secondary school students were forming their own, much more politicised identity. Clashes between gangs and students only furthered the sense of student solidarity. In 1975 South Africa entered a period of economic depression. Schools were starved of funds -- the government spent R644 a year on a white child's education but only R42 on a black child. The Department of Bantu Education then announced it was removing the Standard 6 year from primary schools. Previously, in order to progress to Form 1 of secondary school, a pupil had to obtain a first or second-degree pass in Standard 6. Now the majority of pupils could proceed to secondary school. In 1976, 257,505 pupils entrolled in Form 1, but there was space for only 38,000. Many of the students therefore remained at primary school. Chaos ensued. The African Students Movement, founded in 1968 to voice student grievances, changed its name in January 1972 to the South African Students Movement (SASM) and pledged itself to building a national movement of high school students who would work with the Black Consciousness (BC) organisation at black universities, the South African Students' Organisation (SASO). This link with BC philosophies is significant as it gave students an appreciation for themselves as black people and helped politicise students. So when the Department of Education issued its decree that Afrikaans was to become a language of instruction at school, it was into an already volatile situation. Students objected to being taught in the language of the oppressor. Many teachers themselves could not speak Afrikaans, but were now required to teach their subjects in it.
May 23 South Africa... Habari Gani ?(What News)Xenophobic wave of violence in South Africa: Urgent need for a political responseThe International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH) condemn the current wave of xenophobic violence in South Africa, which reportedly lead to the death of more than 20 people.
On 11 May, violent attacks erupted in the township of Alexandra, North of Johannesburg, targeting foreigners from neighbouring countries, mainly Zimbabweans and Mozambicans, before spreading across the Gauteng Province. This violence against foreigners, who are accused by many South Africans of being responsible for social ills and crimes, have forced at least 6000 people to seek refuge in churches or police stations, fleeing homelessness, gunshots, burning or even rapes. “We are highly saddened by the brutality of this violence. The South Africa authorities should take urgent steps to put an end to this murderous wave of xenophobic violence. They should take all necessary measures to ensure that all individual responsible for murder, rape or any other form of physical violence are brought to justice”, said Souhayr Belhassen, President of FIDH. According to the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), a constitutionally mandated institution, these attacks are the result of the government’s failure to take the threat of xenophobic feelings seriously. Those concerns had already been raised in FIDH’s recent fact-finding mission report on the situation of migrants in South Africa, «Surplus People? Undocumented and other vulnerable migrants in South Africa», which emphasizes the most worrying human rights violations faced by migrants due to the South African migration policy geared towards security concerns and population control. Today, the FIDH reiterates its recommendations to the South Africa’s authorities, urging them to reinforce their human-rights-based legal framework in order to prevent and redress human rights violations against migrants. Once again, FIDH urges them to provide widespread training on migrant’s rights and against xenophobia to police services, immigration services, public health and education services and local administrations. South Africa also needs to develop research and public education on the number and categories of migrants coming to South Africa, the reasons for their stay, as well as their role and place in South African economy and society. FIDH, which participated in the 43rd ordinary session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights’ (ACHPR), held in Ezulwini, Swaziland, since 7 May 2008, also raised the issue of the situation of migrants in South Africa during the public sessions. FIDH calls on the ACHPR, which is concluding its session, to adopt an urgent resolution to condemn this crisis situation and to provide its Special Rapporteur on Refugees and Displaced Persons in Africa with all the necessary means to conduct an investigation mission in South Africa, within the framework of his mandate.
South Africa: Xenophobic Mayhem Hammers the Currency
Business Day (Johannesburg) 21 May 2008 Mariam Isa THE rand slid sharply against major currencies yesterday as photographs of xenophobic violence hit the front pages of leading international news- papers, tarnishing SA's image in the eyes of foreign investors. A downturn in global appetite for risk played a role in the unit's slide of 1,7% to the dollar and 2,6% to the euro, which erased much of its gains of the past two sessions. Those gains were in step with other emerging-market currencies. Traders said stark images of violence on the front pages of the Financial Times, Guardian and New York Times, prompted a kneejerk retreat in the rand yesterday. "The photographs had a marked effect," said Paul Kamp, a senior dealer with Standard Chartered in London. "The violence has been going on for a while, but when investors see these pictures on the front pages they wonder what's going on -- it's not nice to see." More than 20 people were killed in the past two weeks in a wave of violence against African immigrants accused by some poor South Africans of stealing jobs and houses. The rand held at an 11-week peak to the dollar at the start of the week, buoyed by an upswing in global risk appetite which propelled the JSE to a record high for the fourth successive trading day. But a fall in demand for equities added to the shock delivered by images of rioters and burning buildings that hit foreign newspapers' front pages for the first time yesterday. That helped knock the rand to R7,68 to the dollar from Monday's closing R7,53/$. That happened despite the dollar's descent to a one-month low against a basket of six major currencies after a report that interest rates in the euro zone may rise soon. "Equities have turned a bit softer but our situation is exacerbated by the xenophobic violence," said Dave Gracey, Nedbank Capital's head of foreign exchange and fixed income. Overseas investors account for most of the trade in the rand, the fifth most actively traded emerging-market currency. Gracey said if the rand closed above R7,65/$ it would head to R7,75, the next big technical level. The unit has weakened by more than 12% against a trade-weighted basket of currencies monitored by the Reserve Bank this year in a trend set to stoke inflation and prompt further hikes in interest rates. The violence will not change SA's economic fundamentals, but there is concern about its effect on tourism, which accounts for 8% of the economy and more than a million jobs. Lehman Bro-thers emerging markets analyst Peter Attard Montalto said the attacks compounded concern about SA's ability to host the 2010 Soccer World Cup. "SA's success has been partly due to immigrants from surrounding countries," he said. There are about 5-million immigrants in SA, mostly from Zimbabwe. Attard Montalto said a raft of key economic data due next week, combined with risk aversion and continued xenophobia, could conspire to drive the rand back above the R8/$ level in the near term. That level was last breached in late March, when the rand weakened to a five-year low of R8,25/$. Business Unity SA condemned the attacks in "the strongest possible terms". "These attacks have done a lot of damage to the country's moral stature, especially in so far as tolerance and inclusion are concerned. It is our view that they should be treated as criminal offences, and the perpetrators treated as such." What can we People do to help our Men to live in Brotherwood ???
